Georgia is home to variety of museums, 261 in total, as of 2024, offering insights into the country’s cultural, historical, and artistic legacy. As the National Statistics Office (Geostat) revealed, these institutions include 104 memorial museums, 74 focused on history and regional studies, 23 art museums, 13 museum-reserves, 2 dedicated to literary studies, and 45 categorized as other types.
Tbilisi remains Georgia’s cultural center, housing 22.6% of all museums in the country. Imereti (15.3%) and Kakheti (14.2%) follow the capital.
However, visitor numbers have slightly declined. Georgian museums welcomed a total of 1.9 million guests in 2024, a 7.8% drop compared to the previous year. On average, each museum received around 7,300 visitors. Meanwhile, the number of guided excursions saw a modest decrease of 3%, totaling 45,000.
Despite the overall decrease in attendance, the number of exhibitions held grew by 2.5%, reaching 939. This suggests that museums remain active and still engage audiences with new and diverse programming, even as visitor trends negatively change.
