Preliminary data from Geostat reveals that meat production in Georgia reached its highest level since 2006. The country produced 83.7 thousand tons of meat, a 6.4% increase compared to the previous year. The reported figure includes beef, pork, poultry, as well as sheep and goat meat.

“This marks the highest annual output since 2006, when Georgia produced 83.3 thousand tons,” Geostat noted, adding that the growth trend in production has been steady since 2021 but incremental.

Meat consumption is also on the rise. In 2023, average per capita consumption hit 45 kilograms, up from 40 kg in 2022. However, domestic production still falls short of meeting national demand.

Georgia’s meat self-sufficiency rate stood at 47% in 2023 and is projected to remain below the 50% mark in 2024. The last time the country surpassed this threshold was in 2018, when the rate reached 52%.

Although production has increased, Georgia still relies heavily on imports. In 2023, meat imports rose to 108.7 thousand tons, up 7.5% from the previous year. Meanwhile, exports declined sharply by 30.5%, totaling just 18.2 thousand tons.
