Georgia’s air transport sees significant growth in 2024

Georgia’s air transport sees significant growth in 2024

The National Statistics Office of Georgia (Geostat) recently published data revealing that Georgia’s air transport sector experienced considerable growth in 2024, with noticeable increases in passenger numbers, cargo transport, and airport operations.

Passenger and Flight Statistics

  • In 2024, 644.5 thousand passengers were transported via air travel in Georgia, marking a 1.8-fold increase.
  • Passenger turnover reached 1,766.2 million passenger-kilometers, doubling last year’s figure.
  • Georgian airports served 7.44 million passengers, a 23.9% increase from 2023.
    • Arrivals: 3.71 million passengers (+24.2%)
    • Departures: 3.73 million passengers (+23.5%)
  • 94% of passenger traffic was attributed to regular flights.
  • The total number of commercial flights reached 30.3 thousand, 18.9% more than in 2023.

Cargo and Freight Operations

  • In 2024, 269.6 thousand tons of cargo were transported by air, representing a 20.3% increase from the previous year.
  • Freight turnover reached 611.5 million ton-kilometers, growing by 43.6% year-on-year.
  • Georgian airports handled 26.2 thousand tons of cargo and mail:
    • 86.7% was inbound
    • 13.3% was outbound
  • A total of 2.2 thousand cargo flights were carried out in 2024, marking a 2.1-fold increase from 2023.

Aviation Fleet and Infrastructure

  • The Georgian Civil Aircraft Registry recorded 70 aircraft in 2024, a 16.7% increase from the previous year.
    • 78.6% were passenger aircraft
    • 21.4% were cargo aircraft
    • Of the passenger fleet:
      • 76.4% had fewer than 50 seats
      • 10.9% had 51–150 seats
      • 12.7% had 151–250 or more seats
  • Georgian airports operated with 6 runways, 58 checkpoints, 25 passenger gates, and 1.9 thousand parking spaces for private vehicles.
