Starting October 1, 2024, all newly constructed buildings in Georgia’s self-governing cities must be equipped with smart gas meters, as mandated by a new resolution from the National Energy and Water Supply Regulatory Commission (GNERC). GNERC chairman Davit Narmania emphasized that these meters eliminate the need for direct contact with subscribers and streamline accounting and reporting processes. Existing customers also have the option to request smart meters.
The requirement will expand to all municipalities beginning July 1, 2025. Energy Ombudsman Nino Guleishvili pointed out that smart meters resolve common accounting issues by providing accurate and tamper-proof gas consumption data.
