The Prime Minister of Georgia, Irakli Kobakhidze, met with the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, the Vice President of the European Commission, Josep Borrell.
The governmental administration reports that Joseph Borrell congratulated Irakli Kobakhidze on his appointment as Prime Minister and wished him success in his future activities.
The agency reports that at the meeting the parties discussed the process of Georgia’s accession to the European Union.
“Irakli Kobakhidze emphasized the importance of granting the candidate status to Georgia and noted that the granting of the candidate status is the result of intensive efforts and steps taken by the Georgian authorities. He claimed that the Government of Georgia continues to actively work to move to the next stage of integration into the European Union and to work in this direction in order to open negotiations for joining the European Union. For this purpose, the Prime Minister spoke about the steps already taken by the Government of Georgia and the future plans.
The parties also discussed the current situation in the occupied territories of Georgia and emphasized the need for Russia to fulfill the cease-fire agreement concluded on August 12, 2008 with the mediation of the European Union. The Prime Minister thanked the European Union for their valuable involvement in the process of supporting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia and the peaceful resolution of the conflict.
Irakli Kobakhidze spoke about the importance of Josep Borrell’s visit to Georgia last year and his further support in the process of joining the European Union. The head of the government thanked the Vice-President of the European Union for his support and for the close cooperation between the European Union and Georgia”, reads the information.
For the record, Prime Minister of Georgia Irakli Kobakhidze left for Brussels on his first visit.
Within the framework of the visit, the Prime Minister plans bilateral meetings in the European Union and NATO.
