The former mayor of Dmanisi municipality, Giorgi Tatuashvili, who was running for the local elections in 2021 with the opposition quota, claims that he was attacked today by people close to the “Georgian Dream.”
He was allegedly shot five times while driving a car. The former mayor of Dmanisi was traveling alone at the time of the accident.
Tatuashvili claims that he was attacked by the members of special groups used by the ruling party to intimidate the population during both the 2020 parliamentary and 2021 local elections in Dmanisi – Zurab Okmelashvili and Koba Menabdishvili.
“The tire and back seat of the car were damaged, which saved me from physical damage. There is video footage of the attack, which was captured by the video recorder. The materials will be immediately handed over to the relevant investigative services.
The attack on me with a firearm should be considered as an attempt to intimidate the population before the 2024 parliamentary elections and it indicates that there will be bloody acts of revenge wherever “Georgian Dream” does not have unconditional support! Both local and international organizations will be informed about the said attack,” said Giorgi Tatuashvili.
Based on available information, the attackers were chased by the police, however, they did not obey the demands of the law enforcement officers and fled.
Currently, law enforcement officers are working on the spot, while the interrogation of eyewitnesses is going on. The car was taken for examination.
