“Today, 63 cases of Omicron have been laboratory confirmed in the country. We predict that within 2-3 weeks, Omicron may become dominant in our country,” said Amiran Gamkrelidze, head of the National Center for Disease Control.
He noted that most of these cases reported are imported from other countries and there is no severe course of the disease, as most of the infected have been vaccinated.
Gamkrelidze said Omicron is relatively easy for vaccinated people, and even for non-vaccinated people the symptoms are mild.
“One of the theories is that Omicron may be the beginning of the end of the pandemic. But it is not that easy. It is coming like a tsunami, in very large quantities, and there may be a lot of pressure on the healthcare sector,” Gamkrelidze said.
