Trump announces ‘most devastating economic operation’ against Iran

US President Donald Trump has announced a new economic sanctions campaign against Iran aimed at further isolating the country, describing it as an economic operation of unprecedented scale.

“No one has given the Islamic Republic of Iran a greater opportunity to make a deal than I have. Unfortunately for them, they failed to do so. Therefore, today I am announcing the most devastating economic operation ever undertaken against any country! This will be economic warfare and isolation on an unprecedented scale,” Trump wrote on social media.

Trump claimed that Iran’s navy “no longer exists,” its air force has been destroyed, its military factories have been reduced to rubble, its currency has become worthless and the country is “hanging by a thread.”

The US president warned that any country allowing its financial institutions, businesses, airports or government agencies to support Iran would face “massive economic consequences.”

“Oil smuggling, swap lines, remittances, exchange houses, ship registries, shell companies — all of it must stop immediately,” Trump said.

He added that all US allies should stand with Washington in an effort to isolate and defeat what he described as the threat posed by Iran.

“These maniacs are already backed into a corner. These historic measures will cripple them and their ability to spread terror throughout the world,” Trump wrote.
