Russian missile and drone strikes on Kyiv and the Kyiv region have killed at least 12 people, injured 34 and caused widespread destruction and fires.
The overnight attack began on August 19 and continued into August 20. Ukraine’s State Emergency Service confirmed that 12 people had been killed and 34 injured in Kyiv by 9 a.m. on August 20.
In Kyiv’s Sviatoshynskyi district, a strike hit an industrial facility, causing fires at three warehouses. In the Solomianskyi district, the top two floors of a nine-story residential building were destroyed, while three other floors caught fire. Several homes, two medical facilities, a school and a store were also damaged. A strike on a non-residential facility in the Darnytskyi district also caused fires in warehouses.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko declared August 21 a day of mourning in the capital in honor of those killed in the Russian attack.
Russian missile and drone strikes also targeted the Kyiv region. The local military administration reported that one person was killed and another injured in the Brovary district. Six people were injured in the Boryspil district. Across the affected districts, 14 private homes and one apartment building were destroyed or damaged, along with four warehouses and a gas station.
Reuters reports that Russia’s Defense Ministry said on August 20 that Russian missiles and drones struck a munitions depot, industrial facilities, Fire Point and Antonov facilities, as well as a trade and warehouse complex belonging to Ukrspetssystems in Kyiv.
The ministry claimed the sites produced and stored components for Ukrainian drones and missiles. It also said Russian forces struck a transport and logistics hub and a fuel depot in the Kyiv region used to support the Ukrainian military. The statement did not mention any damage to or destruction of civilian facilities, or casualties among civilians.
