The Prosecutor’s Office of the Autonomous Republic of Adjara has arrested a lawyer on charges of exerting influence on a victim.
An investigation by the Investigative Department of the Prosecutor’s Office of the Autonomous Republic of Adjara established that the lawyer representing a person charged with forcing a minor to engage in sexual intercourse offered the victim’s friend and mother money and other material benefits in exchange for persuading the victim to change the information provided during questioning and give false information to the investigation, with the aim of securing a lesser sentence for his client.
“The detainee was charged under Part 2 of Article 372 of the Criminal Code (exerting influence on a victim), which carries a sentence of up to six years in prison,” the Prosecutor’s Office said in a statement.
The Prosecutor’s Office said it has already petitioned the court to impose a pretrial detention measure on the accused.
