Gakharia for Georgia summons education minister to Parliament through interpellation procedure

The opposition Gakharia for Georgia party is summoning Georgia’s Minister of Education, Science and Youth, Givi Mikanadze, to Parliament through the interpellation procedure.

Party member Tata Khvedeliani said key questions raised by university applicants remain unanswered, and the Minister is obligated to provide exhaustive responses before the legislative body.

Speaking at a briefing, Khvedeliani congratulated final-year pupils on their last school bell, describing the period as a decisive stage in young people’s lives, when choices regarding education and future careers are made.

“At a time when school leavers need encouragement and support while preparing for exams and deciding where to continue their education, the Georgian Dream government is instead creating uncertainty and chaos,” Khvedeliani said.

MP claimed that prospective students still lack clarity on a number of fundamental issues, including whether they will be able to enroll at their preferred university, the duration of degree programs, the cost of education to the state, and whether they may be required to relocate to another city to continue their studies.

“These questions remain unanswered to this day. In light of this, the political force Gakharia for Georgia is summoning Education Minister Givi Mikanadze through the interpellation procedure. He is obliged to appear before Parliament and provide the public with exhaustive answers,” Khvedeliani stated.

She added that the party has already submitted questions related to education funding, staffing policy, infrastructure, redistribution of academic programs, academic freedom, general education, and other issues directly connected to the future of citizens.

Khvedeliani also criticized the government’s treatment of young people, alleging that police, acting on the orders of the ruling Georgian Dream party, are regularly detaining students and young people near universities.

“This is the violent and repressive approach that Georgian Dream has entrenched in the country,” Khvedeliani said, further accusing Mikanadze of facilitating repression within educational institutions.
