The Holy Fire has descended at the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, one of the most sacred events in the Orthodox Christian calendar.
The flame was brought out from the Edicule — the chapel built over the Tomb of Christ — by Patriarch Theophilos III of Jerusalem and All Palestine.
Prior to the miracle, the Orthodox Patriarch entered the Tomb of Christ inside the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, after which the entrance was sealed. The Holy Fire is believed to miraculously appear within the tomb. This year, the flame descended at 15:13 Tbilisi time.
According to tradition, the Holy Fire first appeared in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in the 3rd century and has since remained a central part of Orthodox Easter celebrations, symbolizing the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
