The Ministry of Economy of Georgia says container cargo turnover at the country’s seaports increased by 4% in the first quarter of 2026.

The Ministry reports that 188,149 TEU were processed during the period, compared to 180,177 TEU in the same period of 2025.

The Deputy Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development, Tamar Ioseliani, says the growth reflects continued positive dynamics in the sector and suggests the trend will continue in 2026. She also states that Georgia’s role in regional and global logistics is increasing.

“It is noteworthy that the Poti Sea Port recorded the highest number of containers handled in the first quarter of 2026, as well as the number of container ships received,” Ioseliani said. “It is also worth highlighting the increase in the number of containers handled in the Batumi Sea Port, which rose by 3%.”

She adds that the data reflects government efforts to develop maritime infrastructure.

Ioseliani also highlights ongoing strategic projects, including the Anaklia Deepwater Port, which she says will allow Georgia to receive Panamax and Post-Panamax vessels for the first time.

“It is worth noting that the expansion of ports, modernization of the railway network and improvement of road highways are underway at the same time,” Ioseliani said. “In addition, special attention is paid to digital transformation – the maritime ‘single window’ system is already operating in Georgian ports, ensuring fast, transparent and safe management of operations.”

The Deputy Minister notes that in 2025, container shipping increased by 17%, general cargo by 20%, and ferry traffic by 31%.
