From Field to Future: How TBC Supports the Mirianashvili Brothers in Transforming Georgian Grain Farming

Three years ago, when worms infested a wheat field in Tsnori, farmer and agronomist Vasil Mirianashvili faced a challenge. Spraying the crops with a tractor was costly and damaged up to 5% of the harvest. Seeking a smarter solution, he turned to drone technology. The results were immediate and impressive: 80 hectares of grain sprayed in just two days—with no crop loss.

The Mirianashvili brothers didn’t inherit their land—they bought it in 1998 and have been building their agribusiness ever since. Today, they cultivate multiple varieties of wheat, barley, and sunflower across the fertile Alazani Valley.

They’ve learned that, much like people, soil suffers from monotony. Innovation and change are essential.

“Crop rotation is necessary. You can’t grow wheat in the same field every year—it depletes the soil,” says Vasil Mirianashvili. “This year, I planted French wheat, which is disease-resistant and perfect for baking.”

Their success isn’t the product of tradition alone. The brothers don’t split responsibilities formally, but both are deeply involved in every step—researching new methods, testing products, consulting experts, and always learning. They don’t bake bread themselves, but they can instantly judge the quality of wheat by sight.

“Right after the July harvest, you must cultivate the soil immediately to prevent weeds. Then comes the risk of drought, which can crack the soil and destroy the top layer. Grain farming is a year-round commitment,” Mirianashvili explains.

Kakheti has a centuries-old grain-growing tradition, and Tsnori, with its fertile soils, is ideal for this work. “A good yield is 5–6 tons per hectare, and we’ve even reached 7 tons. If done right, we could meet 45% of Georgia’s wheat demand,” he says.

But precision farming isn’t enough. Beyond experience, care, and the right decisions, luck—particularly with weather—is crucial.

Unlike vineyards, wheat fields can’t be insured against weather damage. When nature strikes, financial resilience becomes key. That’s where TBC comes in.

The Mirianashvilis have relied on TBC’s affordable agricultural loans for years.

“There have been seasons when I harvested only 30% of the expected yield. Of course, there was no profit. But trust is what should link a farmer and a bank. Even in hard times, TBC stood by us because they believe in our business. That trust gives me peace of mind and allows us to plan for the future,” says the farmer.

Their plans include building a cold storage facility and expanding into new plots to grow perennial crops—yet another step in their journey from tradition to innovation, supported every step of the way by TBC.

TBC and the Blueberry Breakthrough: Adjarian Family’s Journey to Western Markets

In the village of Gvara, just 9 kilometers from Kobuleti, Jemal Tsetskhladze and his family cultivate blueberries on 28 hectares of land—and plan to expand further.

Blueberries are a relatively new crop in Georgia, with commercial cultivation beginning only in 2010. Jemal Tsetskhladze was the first in Adjara to replace an old, wild tea plantation with this promising new fruit.

Today, we can ask artificial intelligence to list the health benefits of blueberries in precise detail. But in 2016, when the Tsetskhladze family was researching markets and analyzing trends, there was no ChatGPT to consult. They compiled their own guide, taking bold and risky steps into uncharted agricultural territory.

“Preferential agrocredit was a major incentive in this process,” recalls Jemal Tsetskhladze. “My wife—also my partner—and I gathered detailed information. First, we planted soybeans to rehabilitate the soil after removing the tea plants. Only then did we plant our first blueberry seedlings.”

Initial progress was difficult due to a dishonest seedling supplier. But once they found the right variety, they discovered that blueberries thrive in acidic soil and are not easily suited to a subtropical climate.

“The variety we grow here is much tastier than its counterparts from other countries, which has pleasantly surprised our international partners. They really appreciate the Black Sea climate. The berries are juicier and larger—but achieving this quality requires relentless effort. The plant demands constant care and punishes every mistake,” Jemal explains.

Global demand for blueberries is rising, and prices are steadily increasing. However, entering Western markets means complying with strict standards set by the EU and Gulf countries. There is also interest from another region—the so-called “Northern market”—which does not require high quality, but Jemal does not consider it stable and prefers to focus on the Western segment.

“We sell around 3 to 4 tons locally in Georgia. We also have refrigeration infrastructure on-site to preserve the harvest. Domestic demand is growing steadily, but you can’t manage a project of this scale without bank support,” says Jemal.

Competition among exporting countries is intense. Morocco, for example, is one of the largest blueberry suppliers to Europe. Understanding how they transport berries over long distances while maintaining quality is essential learning for Georgian farmers.

On half of their 28 hectares, the Tsetskhladze family has already planted newer, more resilient, and productive blueberry varieties. Their next goal is to fully replace the older plants. For that, they are once again relying on the continued support of TBC Bank.
