TBC Strengthens Its Commitment to Winter Sports as the Main Sponsor of Svaneti Freeride Week Junior
TBC continues its active support for winter sports this year, with a strong focus on fostering the next generation of athletes. For the second consecutive year, TBC proudly serves as the main sponsor of Svaneti Freeride Week Junior.
Starting February 12, Mestia will welcome young freeriders and winter sports enthusiasts for a week-long celebration of adventure and competition. Alongside the sporting events, a competition village will be set up in Mestia Park, offering visitors the chance to watch freeride competitions, enjoy film screenings on a big screen, and explore products from local entrepreneurs.
The junior competition will take place on February 13, with up to 25 young athletes descending through the deep snow on Zuruldi. Spectators and winter sports enthusiasts can enjoy the event from designated viewing areas. The competition is open to all who wish to attend.
Svaneti Freeride Week Junior provides young Georgian athletes with a unique opportunity to compete on a world-class stage. It promises an unforgettable experience for freeride and adrenaline enthusiasts, filled with excitement and new challenges.
Supporting regional development and encouraging youth participation in sports are key priorities for TBC. This initiative not only promotes winter sports and tourism but also contributes to the long-term growth of young athletes’ careers.
Following the Svaneti event, TBC and Freeride will continue their journey in March, moving to Gudauri for the next stage of the competition.
Why is the Georgian Lari (GEL) Strengthening?
TBC Capital Weekly Update from the Chief Economist
In a previous update, TBC Capital highlighted that, based on the primary sources of net foreign exchange inflows, significant short-term fluctuations in the GEL were not the base case scenario. Consequently, unlike most market participants, the recent strengthening of the GEL has not come as a surprise.
To provide further insight, TBC Capital examines the key foreign exchange flow components from Q4 2023 to Q3 2024:
- Imports of goods: $14.7 billion
- Exports of goods: $8.3 billion
- Tourism receipts (excluding migration): $4.0 billion
- Migration-related inflows: $1.1 billion
- Travel expenditures abroad: $490 million
- Net remittances: $4.0 billion
- Net dividends from foreign investment: $1.1 billion
- Net reinvestment from foreign investment: $1.0 billion
- Net foreign direct investment (excluding reinvestment): $147 million
- Net portfolio investment, loans, and other sector-specific investments:
- Government: $309 million
- Private sector: $192 million
- Commercial banks: $133 million
Among these, the most sensitive flows include:
- Tourism revenues, particularly considering that approximately 45% translates into imported goods.
- Demand for durable goods, which are almost entirely imported in Georgia.
- Investment activity.
Based on the latest data, including February figures, current economic conditions have had a negative impact on overall growth, particularly imports, but not on the GEL. Furthermore, as of early February, tourism revenues show signs of recovery, while demand for durable goods remains subdued.
Additionally, it is crucial to consider the so-called “good times buffer”—an estimated $1 billion effect resulting from increased deposit dollarization and credit larization. As of December, the key balances stand as follows:
- GEL loans: $12.6 billion (USD equivalent)
- Foreign currency loans: $9.6 billion
- GEL deposits: $9.8 billion
- Foreign currency deposits: $10.9 billion
Notably, in recent months, there have been no significant additional deposit conversions. However, foreign currency lending has increased, which supports the GEL.
In light of increased uncertainty, TBC Capital recommends maintaining a diversified approach when considering GEL, USD, and EUR positions. A focus on medium-to-long-term indicators is advised to mitigate the risk of overreacting to short-term fluctuations, which often lead to substantial losses.
