The final meeting of a specially formed commission on restoring Georgian language instruction was held under the leadership of Zviad Gabisonia, Deputy Minister of Education, Science and Youth. The initiative is part of a broader state effort to strengthen the role of the Georgian language in higher education.
In the scope of the reforms, a new mandatory course in the Georgian state language will be introduced at the undergraduate level. The decision came after amendments to the Law on Higher Education were passed during the 2025 spring session. The course will also incorporate Abkhaz language instruction which Gabisonia emphasized as a critical component of the program.
Universities will have flexibility in implementation, with the option to begin the course as early as the first semester of the 2025–2026 academic year or at a later time of their choice.
Initiated by Minister Givi Mikanadze, the expert commission was tasked with outlining the course structure in within the new legal requirements. The proposed framework will next be submitted to the Rectors’ Council. After receiving input from universities, the final version of the course guidelines will be approved.
The Ministry notes that upon successful completion of the course, students will be expected to demonstrate proficiency in oral and written academic communication, analyze both general and professional content, and effectively use modern language-learning technologies.
