A recent study, developed by the partnership between the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Absorption Inventory, revealed that four primary economic sectors are responsible for the bulk of emissions.
Emissions in Georgia are primarily concentrated in:
- Energy (65.78%) – The largest contributor, primarily due to fossil fuel consumption.
- Industry & Product Use (12.79%) – Emissions have nearly quadrupled since 1990.
- Agriculture (11.50%) – A stable source of emissions over the years.
- Waste (9.93%) – Increasing due to rapid urbanization.
The report was put together with the support of the Ministry of Environment and Agriculture of Georgia and the Center for Environmental Information and Education. It emphasizes the necessity for urgent climate action, primarily in the energy sector, to cut emissions.
