The Tbilisi City Court has found Tedo Abramov not guilty of a drug crime and he was released from the courtroom. The decision was made by Judge Tamar Mchedlishvili, who said that law enforcement could have conducted video recording or presented a neutral witness which would have made the case indisputable.
Abramov was arrested on December 7, 2024, and charged under Part 6 of Article 260 of the Criminal Code for the illegal acquisition and possession of “a particularly large amount of narcotic substances.” The investigation by the Ministry of Internal Affairs determined that he had acquired and possessed 4.41548 grams of MDMA. This offense carries a penalty of 8 to 20 years of imprisonment or life.
After the verdict, Abramov addressed supporters outside the courtroom, stating: “There are far too many innocent people locked up. First and foremost, we need to fix this situation, friends. We will save you and help absolutely everyone! I’m with you and I’m very happy.”
The Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia has announced it will appeal the Tbilisi City Court’s decision to the Court of Appeals, still believing that the accused illegally acquired and possessed MDMA.
This case has drawn attention due to the relatively small quantity of the substance involved and the court’s ruling in favor of the defendant, emphasizing concerns over evidence handling in drug-related prosecutions.
