The Ministry of IDPs, Labor, Health, and Social Affairs has announced that a working meeting took place by the Trilateral Social Partnership Commission to discuss the ongoing crisis involving Chiatura miners and their wage crisis.
Representatives from the Ministry, Labor Inspection, Trade Unions, and the Employers Association took part in the discussions, focusing on the situation created by the Chiatura Management Company’s suspension of mining operations, which has left workers in limbo.
The primary raised issue was the 60% wage arrears from January, to which trade unions proposed that miners receive immediate payment of the outstanding wages. The proposal received a positive response from participants, who agreed to work towards this solution.
Apart from that, the commission urged the Chiatura Management Company to review its decision and properly negotiate with the miners directly. The discussion also covered the company’s stance that mining operations are financially unsustainable. A specialized commission will reevaluate this claim, taking into account an evaluation from DMT Consulting Company.
