Former President of Georgia, Mikheil Saakashvili, has condemned Irakli Kobakhidze’s recent open letter to U.S. President, calling it a ‘message to Moscow’ disguised as diplomacy.
In a Facebook post, Saakashvili accused the ruling Georgian Dream party of firmly pursuing an anti-American agenda since 2012 and claimed that the letter reveals geopolitical intentions.
“This letter is written to Moscow and is addressed not to Trump, but to Moscow,” Saakashvili wrote. “The restoration of diplomatic relations and then the complete annexation of Georgia are being prepared.”
He further criticized what he called ‘naive’ interpretations of the letter as a plea to Donald Trump. “Ivanishvili is not begging Trump for anything. He knows exactly what conditions the Trump administration has set for normalization, including the release of all political prisoners,” he said, referring to Georgian Dream founder Bidzina Ivanishvili.
Saakashvili’s comments come amid growing tensions between the government and Western partners, with the opposition accusing the ruling party of abandoning Georgia’s Euro-Atlantic aspirations.
