Russian authorities have sentenced Aleko Elisashvili, a prominent figure in the Georgian political party “Strong Georgia,” to six years in prison in absentia for fighting alongside Ukrainian forces.
The decision was announced in a statement by Russia’s Investigative Committee, which confirmed that the court found the evidence presented sufficient to convict Elisashvili. He was found guilty under Part 3 of Article 359 of Russia’s Criminal Code, which pertains to participating as a mercenary in armed conflict.
The sentence mandates that the term be served in a high-security penal colony.
Elisashvili had already been added to Russia’s international wanted list prior to the sentencing.
