Poti Sea Port has safely received a 30,000-ton oil tanker as part of current efforts to improve port operations and maritime coordination led by Georgia’s Maritime Transport Agency.
The agency stated that the Maltese-flagged tanker ‘SEA NIMBUS’, operated by Gulf, entered Poti Port on February 7 after being loaded at ExxonMobil’s oil refinery in the Port of Antwerp. The vessel’s arrival is a big milestone, demonstrating the port’s readiness to accommodate large-tonnage ships in full compliance with international maritime standards.
The safe berthing of the tanker was made possible through coordinated efforts between the Maritime Transport Agency of Georgia, JSC Poti Sea Port Corporation, APM Terminals Poti and the terminal operator Channel Energy (Poti) Limited. As part of the preparations, the port achieved a depth of 10.4 meters, enabling the safe entry of a vessel with a 10-meter draft.
The agency noted that this is the first time in the past ten years that Poti Port has reached such depth levels. The ability to receive tankers of this class significantly strengthens the port’s operational and infrastructural capacity, enhances its regional competitiveness, and reinforces Georgia’s role within international maritime logistics and transit corridors.
Further dredging and depth expansion are planned within the agency’s long-term policy, which will allow the port to accommodate vessels with even greater drafts and improve overall infrastructure efficiency. Officials say these developments confirm Poti Port’s technical and operational readiness to safely handle high-tonnage vessels and contribute to the growth of Georgia’s transit, logistics and economic potential
