The Legal Affairs Committee of the Parliament of Georgia has approved, in its first reading, amendments to the Law on Remuneration in Public Institutions that would introduce special rules for interns working in Georgia’s diplomatic missions abroad.

The draft legislation was presented to the committee by Khatuna Totladze, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs.

The explanatory note said that the proposed amendments take into account the specific functions and organizational structure of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia.

Under the current law, public sector interns are subject to a maximum remuneration limit. The amendments would introduce an exception stating that this cap does not apply to interns employed in the Ministry’s structural units outside Georgia.

In addition, a new article would be added to the law specifying that interns serving in Georgia’s diplomatic missions and consular posts abroad will receive remuneration within limits defined by a legal act issued by the Minister of Foreign Affairs.

The draft law was prepared by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and submitted to Parliament by the Government of Georgia. Following approval at first reading, the bill will proceed through further parliamentary consideration before final adoption.
