The Public Defender’s Office reported that two individuals detained near Tbilisi City Court on May 22 have accused police of excessive force and ill-treatment.

During a visit to the detainees, representatives of the ombudsman’s office observed visible physical injuries on one of the individuals, including “swelling, redness, bruises and scratches on his limbs.” The statement notes both detainees were being held on administrative charges.”

“The detainees reported alleged use of excessive force and ill-treatment by the police,” the Public Defender’s Office said, saying that the case has been formally referred to the Special Investigation Service for a legal response.

The Public Defender pledged to ‘continue monitoring the ongoing legal proceedings’ and encouraged the public to report any human rights violations by calling its hotline at 1481.
