Mzia Amaglobeli, founder of Batumelebi and Netgazeti, strongly rejected the plea bargain offered by the prosecutor’s office during her ongoing trial at Batumi City Court, calling it deeply offensive and comparing it to “being buried alive.”
Amaglobeli reaffirmed that her action — slapping Batumi Police Chief Irakli Dgebuadze — should not be classified as an attack on a police officer.
“The first thing I must address is the plea deal proposed by the prosecutor’s office. My lawyers couldn’t fully express my stance: I will not sign it. The offer is very insulting and feels like I’m being buried alive. What happened was not an attack. To frame a slap as an assault is malicious — I don’t even know what law allows for this. I’ve been thinking about it for seven months,” Amaglobeli stated.
She emphasized that from the moment of her arrest, she has never avoided responsibility regarding the incident with Dgebuadze.
“About ten investigators wrapped up this case and brought it to court without asking a single serious question — in my view, because they weren’t interested in the truth. Had the investigation been professional and unbiased, this case wouldn’t have made it to court under this classification. [Irakli Dgebuadze] promised I would get a 4 to 7-year sentence — and the prosecutor’s office backed him. Now it’s the court’s turn to decide my fate and punishment,” Amaglobeli concluded.
