The National Statistics Office (Geostat) published a report revealing that professional theater attendance has dropped significantly, with a 17.6% decrease compared to the previous year. Total attendance fell to 636,100, with two-thirds of the audience, 66.2%, recorded in Tbilisi. Imereti followed with 10.3%, while the rest of the country accounted for the remaining share.
A total of 54 professional theaters operated nationwide, most of them (29) being drama, musical comedy, or miniatures. The rest consisted of uppet theaters (7), opera and ballet houses (2), and children’s and youth theaters. Theaters are heavily concentrated in Tbilisi (53.7%), with 14.8% in Imereti and 31.5% across other regions.
In terms of performance volume, the country hosted 4,518 theater events in 2024, a 3.5% drop from previous year. Of those, 69.4% were staged in the capital. Meanwhile, offsite performances reached 177, and 136 events were held abroad.
Despite the drop in both attendance and performances, the data shows an active theatrical life, mainly in Tbilisi, though challenges remain for broader regional engagement and audience growth.
