Chairman of Georgia’s National Energy and Water Supply Regulatory Commission (GNERC), Davit Narmania, has announced that the agency stands ready to review and adjust water tariffs once a formal application is submitted. He made the statement during the Energy Expo event, emphasizing that any revision must follow official procedures.
Narmania explained that the current water tariff has remained unchanged for many years. However, in regions where the state has made significant infrastructure investments, amounting to hundreds of millions of GEL, it is essential for tariffs to at least cover operating expenses.
He also addressed public concerns regarding billing in areas with inadequate water supply, clarifying that residents in such locations are not charged as their water meters do not register consumption. “Where there is no water, the meter does not rotate, consumers receive no bills and therefore do not pay anything,” Narmania said.
The chairman reiterated that the commission will initiate a review only if the United Water Supply Company of Georgia officially requests a tariff adjustment.
Earlier, Infrastructure Minister Revaz Sokhadze informed parliament that a comprehensive reform of the United Water Supply Company is in progress. The company is expected to submit a tariff revision application to GNERC next year, with new tariffs projected to be introduced by 2027.
