The Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture announced that starting April 1, 2026, Georgia will prohibit the import of M1 category cars older than six years. The ban will cover both initial and temporary vehicle registration. Exceptions apply to vehicles already imported before the deadline or currently on Georgian customs territory. Electric vehicles will not be affected by the restriction.
As of the end of 2025, Georgia had 1,914,908 registered vehicles, a 6.9% increase from 2024. The breakdown by fuel type is as follows:
- Gasoline: 796,250 vehicles
- Diesel: 373,633
- Hybrids: 188,899
- Gasoline and gas: 187,016
- Electric vehicles: 15,581
- Gas-only vehicles: 2,053
- Other types: 351,476
The government says the measure is part of a bigger strategy to reduce environmental impact and promote cleaner, more sustainable transportation.
