Georgia has installed new road signs on highways nationwide to clearly indicate speed limits by vehicle category, aiming to improve road safety and ensure drivers receive timely, visible information before entering major routes.
The Roads Department of the Ministry of Infrastructure stated that the new signage specifies that certain categories of vehicles are restricted to a maximum speed of 80 km/h on designated highway sections. These categories include large and medium vehicles and buses: C, CE, C1, C1E, D, DE, D1, and D1E, covering trucks, vehicles with trailers, large buses, minibuses and buses with trailers.
The signs have been placed near highway junction exits so that drivers are informed of applicable speed limits before merging onto motorways. This allows drivers to better plan their journey and continue driving in compliance with safety regulations.
The Ministry emphasized that these speed limits are not newly introduced. They have been in force since 2013 and are defined under Article 33, Paragraph 7 (subsections d, e, and v) of Georgia’s Law on Road Traffic. The purpose of installing the new signs is solely to make existing rules more visible, clear, and understandable for drivers.
In parallel, the Ministry of Internal Affairs will begin enforcing violations related to exceeding the 80 km/h limit in sections with differentiated average speed control starting December 22 of this year
