The Government of Georgia has announced an international tender worth 876 million GEL for the construction of a new 70,000-seat stadium on Kakheti Highway, near the turnoff to Tbilisi International Airport. The site covers 270,615 square meters and lies just 1,500 meters from the airport’s runway, inside the airport’s security zone.
As tender documents state, the project will require a detailed assessment of its effect on air traffic. It also states that the stadium site is located within the security zone of Tbilisi International Airport, falling 7,500–7,800 meters from its runway, thus, additional studies will be needed to evaluate “stadium lighting, fireworks, lasers, drones, and other similar factors.”
Proposals are due by September 29, with the winner given 51 months to complete construction, placing the stadium’s opening between 2029 and 2030. By that time, the airport may already have relocated to Vaziani, though a brief overlap between the two facilities remains possible.
