The problem of electricity supply in occupied Abkhazia has been unresolved for years. Illegal mining, which increases power consumption, is a challenge in the area, along with metering. Electricity consumption in Abkhazia is 11 million kWh per day. In 2022, occupied Abkhazia consumed a total of 3 billion kWh of electricity. Of this, 900 million kWh was received from Russia, and 2.1 billion kWh from Engurhesi.
In occupied Abkhazia, “President” Aslan Bzhania got acquainted with the building of Enhesi complex in Gali district. Levan Mebonia, chairman of the board of directors of “Engurhesi,” informed Bzhania how the energy complex functions and its current state.
Bzhania told journalists that “the situation is better this year than last. Regardless, there will not be enough water in the fall, and therefore, we should again appeal to the Russian leadership for electricity protection.”
Bzhania spoke of the need for an energy reform.
“You can use the payment of this amount just like we pay for bread, flour, mobile connection and other goods. Electricity is a commodity that we use. Electricity has been subject to politics. It can’t go on. This is a field of the economy and it should exist according to the laws of economy. We have to understand this,” Bzhania said.
