Geostat published data revealing that domestic tourism in Georgia saw a modest decline in the first quarter of 2025, with both visitor numbers and spending taking a hit.
The national statistics office reported that the monthly average number of Georgian residents aged 15 and older who traveled domestically stood at 1.26 million, an average of 1.5 million total visits each month. This is a 1.2% drop in visitors and a 3.1% decrease in visits.
Tourism activity also slowed on a deeper level. The number of tourist visits, defined as those involving at least one overnight stay, decreased by 9.4% to a monthly average of 623.6 thousand.
Spending patterns reflected the overall downward trend. Monthly average expenditures totaled 242.4 million GEL, showing a decline of 8.8% year-on-year. The average spend per visit also dropped by 5.9%, reaching 160.8 GEL.
Despite the drop, certain demographics remained dominant in the visitor profile. Women accounted for 55% of all domestic travelers, while the 31-50 age group made up 36% of the total. Tbilisi residents led the pack, comprising 35.6% of all visitors, followed by those from Imereti, Racha-Lechkhumi, and Kvemo Svaneti (15.6%).
Tbilisi and Imereti emerged as the most popular destinations. The capital city averaged 378.2 thousand visits per month, while Imereti followed closely with 328.4 thousand.
