The Law of Georgia “On Protection of Consumer Rights” has undergone recent amendments, which will come into effect on August 1, 2023. These changes introduce new regulations regarding fines imposed by the Competition Agency on traders who accept incomplete selections. The fine amount has been set at 500 GEL. However, if a trader commits a similar offense within one year of the initial fine, the amount doubles to 1,000 GEL.
Furthermore, the amendments state that in cases where traders fail to comply with agency decisions or find themselves in irregular situations, they will face a minimum fine of 600 GEL. It’s important to note that the maximum fine should not exceed 2 percent of the trader’s annual turnover in previous years.
These revisions to the law have been made to align Georgian legislation with EU standards. The draft law was proposed by the Committee on Protection with Europe of the Parliament of Georgia, with input from various local and international experts. Their collaboration aims to bring the Georgian consumer protection framework closer to EU legal practices.
