The trial of activist Nino Datashvili, arrested for allegedly assaulting a bailiff, is underway at Tbilisi City Court.
Datashvili, who was present at the hearing, was welcomed with applause from supporters in the courtroom. Diplomats from the embassies of Germany, Denmark, the Netherlands, and the European Union were also in attendance.
Today’s session will focus on the admissibility of evidence and a review of the pre-trial detention measure imposed on Datashvili.
She was arrested on June 20 for an incident that occurred on June 9, and is charged under Part 3 of Article 353 of the Georgian Criminal Code, which refers to assaulting a public servant who is performing official duties. The offense is punishable by a fine or a prison term of four to seven years.
