Ambassador of the European Union to Georgia, Pawel Herczynski noted that it is for the President of Georgia to decide to pardon or not to pardon Nika Gvaramia, adding that in fact, it is her constitutional right to pardon anyone she wants to pardon. Therefore he has nothing to comment on.
He pointed out that one of the 12 priorities is freedom of media. Professionalism, independence, and free expression is one of the principles on which the European Union is based.
“We are watching this and other cases very carefully. There is still time for the European Commission to draft its assessment in the form of an enlargement report. This report will be published in October and the member states at the highest political level, at the level of presidents and prime ministers, will decide on the next steps when it comes to Georgia’s integration process in December this year,” said Herczynski.
