The Coalition for Equality, in partnership with the Civil Society Foundation, has published a 2024 report on the State of Equality in Georgia, revealing the country’s increasing challenges concerning human rights. The information was shared online by the Women’s Initiative Support Group (WISG).
The report analyzes anti-democratic changes, with a particular focus on the consequences of Georgia’s so-called ‘Law of Family Values and Protection of Minors’ and related legislative changes. Per the report, these policies have severe repercussions, including:
- Institutionalized political homophobia and a growing social inequality.
- Restrictions on fundamental rights for LGBTQ+ individuals are impacting healthcare access, employment, education, freedom of information, assembly, and expression.
- Educational limitations, including the elimination of discussions on sexual orientation and gender identity from curricula, a risk to the proper training of professionals such as doctors and lawyers.
The Coalition warns that these changes severely affect Georgia’s democratic foundations and marginalize vulnerable communities and individuals even further.
