- TBC Supports Farmer’s Canning Factory in Kvareli
With TBC’s backing, farmer Avtandil Marakvelidze is set to launch a canning facility in Kvareli. As spring emerges, farmers gear up for a crucial start to the year, marking the beginning of significant agricultural tasks.
In Kvareli, spring activities intensify at Avtandil Marakvelidze’s farm. Spanning 10 hectares, the farm predominantly cultivates vegetable crops, including unconventional species and varieties yet to hit the Georgian market. Procuring seed material from Swiss and Dutch firms enables the cultivation of up to 60 distinct vegetables in Kakheti, renowned for their quality and flavor.
“Our farm showcases unconventional variants of commonly grown vegetables and fruits such as tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, zucchinis, watermelons, and melons. Last year alone, we harvested 13 different watermelon varieties. We offer mini cucumbers, spicy jalapeños, diverse cherry tomatoes, and the renowned locally grown Iceberg lettuce,” says Avtandil Marakvelidze, the cooperative’s founder.
The locally grown Iceberg lettuce, highly favored by Georgian “McDonald’s,” is exclusively purchased by them. Last year, Avtandil Marakvelidze procured up to 80 tons of Iceberg lettuce. Other vegetables and fruits are primarily available in chain hypermarkets.
With TBC’s financial assistance, the cooperative erected a European-standard cold storage facility last year to preserve the harvest. Marakvelidze reveals plans to establish a canning enterprise in the future, focusing on preserving select vegetables grown on their farm. All operations adhere to the international quality standard, Global GAP (Good Agricultural Practice).
