Pope Francis Celebrates Palm Sunday Mass in an Empty Church

On April 5, Pope Francis celebrated Palm Sunday in the closed St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City. The Pope live-streamed the mass in his homily.

The religious holiday, which inaugurates the beginning of Easter week, is usually celebrated outdoors in front of thousands of tourists. However, now that coronavirus has established a new reality for all, the Pope spoke in the presence of a few priests and nuns and a reduced choir, who, according to CNN, all maintained a safe distance from each other.

During the mass, the Pope spoke of the new, “real heroes of these days” and said that devoting life to God and to others, pays.

"Look at the real heroes who come to light in these days: they are not famous, rich and successful people; rather they are those who are giving themselves in order to serve others," said the Pope, adding "feel called yourselves to put your lives on the line. Do not be afraid to devote your life to God and to others, it pays!"
