Construction Company Director Sentenced to Imprisonment Over Worker's Death

The Director of the construction company “GVK Hospitality”, Shishu Pal Burdak, who was detained by the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia regarding the death of a 16-years-old worker who fell into the elevator shaft in a building under construction at Dolabauri Street in Isani District of Tbilisi, has been sentenced to imprisonment.

The defense demanded his release on 30 000 Gel bail, however, the judge did not satisfy the mentioned motion.

The prosecutor’s Office demanded the use of imprisonment as a punitive measure against Burdak.

The defendant himself does not plead guilty and says that he does not know how workers appeared at the construction site, as he did not have any agreement on conducting the construction works.

"I have not committed any offense, I do not know how the workers entered the facility. I have not issued any permit on demontage of the elevator”, the defendant said.

The 16-years-old worker died while demontaging the elevator in a building under construction on July 16.

An investigation has been launched under Article 240 of the Criminal Code of Georgia, involving a breach of safety regulations during mining, construction or other works.

On July 19, the Ministry of Internal Affairs arrested the Director of the construction company “GVK Hospitality”.

"The investigation established that the construction company "GVK Hospitality" was conducting construction works with the violation of safety rules at Dolabauri Street N29 in Tbilisi. G.B, born in 2003, died while demontaging the elevator at the above-mentioned construction site on July 16, 2019," stated MIA.
