2015 VMAs: Taylor Swift Triumphs as Ratings Plummet

MTV’s 2015 edition of the Video Music Awards proudly continued its trend of being the most talked-about award show of the season. The ceremony included numerous risque performances, emotional breakdowns, attendees blasting each other on live TV, Kanye West announcing his bid for the 2020 presidency and the most daring host. While the internet is busy discussing feuds and quarrels, we’ll give you the recap of the actually important parts of the award show – the winners and the performances.

Starting off, Taylor Swift was crowned the triumphant of the night with 4 wins – Video of the Year, Best Pop Video, Best Female Video and Best Collaboration. Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars took home the Moonman for Best Male Video, while the voters declared Fetty Wap as the “Artist to Watch.” The Best Rock Video trophy went to Fall Out Boy, and Nicki Minaj took home the award for Best Hip Hop Video. This year’s Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award was presented to Kanye West by none-other than Taylor Swift, who was interrupted by the rapper while accepting her VMA award back in 2009.

Moving on to the performances, according to Entertainment Weekly, the night’s first (Nicki Minaj and Taylor Swift, “The Night Is Still Young” and “Bad Blood”) and last (Miley Cyrus “Dooo It!”) performances were the very best, while The Weeknd and Tori Kelly’s musical numbers also earned huge praise from fans on social media.

Despite the fact that the 2015 VMAs definitely had a decent dose of shock value and became the most talked about event on Twitter, with 21.4 million tweets, it couldn’t save MTV from losing more viewers. The ceremony’s rating went down by 5%, making it a full 18% fall from the 2013 show. The announcement of the numbers was quickly followed by reports that this would be the last Video Music Awards, ever. Numerous rumors about this are still being circulated throughout the media, but MTV’s representatives have already denied all allegations, stating that they aren’t even “remotely true”.
