Tsageri: rural life becoming easier

Print version Print version

Author:  By Tamar Khurtsia

Nugzar Gugava, 45, from Chkhuteli, in the west Georgian village of Tsageri, has come to the village’s community resource centre to receive advice from an agriculture expert on how to fertilize a plot of potatoes in order to collect the planned amount of harvest.

“I planted the Kondor variety of potato on a 500 square meter plot of land. These potatoes require new technologies to grow, that’s why I often visit the resource centre and I put a lot of effort into developing the plot,” Gugava told Georgia Today. “The resource centre agents are always ready to deliver professional information and motivate us to continue to expand our range and to intensify our work.”

The Community Resource Centre in Tsageri, a town in Racha Lechkhumi in the Kvemo Svaneti region of Georgia, is visited by more than 500 local inhabitants per month. The farmers come to receive recommendations regarding modern farming practices, to adopt improved agricultural and small business practices and to improve their development and planning practices.

The centre was established as part of the Strengthening Community based Initiatives for poverty reduction in Racha-Lechkhumi and Kvemo-Svaneti Region of Georgia (COMBI), a project implemented by CARE Austria and CARE International in the Caucasus.

Doubled demand on Axis Full Package flats purchase

Print version Print version

The introduction of Full Package system of flat purchase on real estate market by Axis, stipulated demand on flats, say representatives of Axis, one of the leading developers in Georgia.

“We have received a 200% increase in phone calls and a 100% increase in customer visits to our offices. The House at the Park (St. Saburtalo), Abashidze Street and Green Yard (at the Vake Swimming Pool) – these are the most popular projects among our customers,” says General Director of Axis Goga Kapanadze.

“It has been just one month and we have advertised what’s called the Full Package. It is a new model of cooperation between banks and developers. We believed there was a demand for the flats; thus, there was a problem of supply. After the economic crisis, customers evaluated the risks more carefully and wanted to buy only completely constructed flats. Full Package, with the bank’s participation, is an absolute warrantee against almost any risk. Therefore, Full Package is an efficient and timely proposal to our customers,” Kapanadze explained. .

Audrey Bogini is French by origin and one of the founders of the Caucasus Trekking Company. Caucasus Trekking Company is a travel agency based in Tusheti, in the mountainous tourist region of Georgia high in the Caucasus. Bogini has found herself in a property dispute.

Bogini purchased a house together with Gia Bakuridze her Georgian business partner, with the intent of it being part of a tourism project in 2006. The asset in question is located in Tusheti.

Bogini bought the house by transferring the money to the owner who lives in Russia. At that time, according to her, there was no possible way to register the house in the Akhmeta municipality, an administrative centre of Tusheti. She began to renovate the house along with Bakuridze.

The problem surfaced when one of the neighbours began asking for a piece of land on which they had already built a new part of the house.

Bogini contacted Georgia Today for assistance in this matter. She points out that the neighbor has succeeded in registering the piece of land where she has begun construction on the new part of the house “with the agreement of the Tusheti director.” Moreover, she complained, the brother from whom Bogini bought the house has succeeded in putting the house under his name.

Tbilisi to get one more tunnel

Print version Print version

Author:  By Nino Edilashvili

In a bid to further reduce traffic in the city, the Tbilisi Municipality began construction on a new tunnel at the entrance of Tbilisi in Agmashenebeli Alley.

The tunnel will connect Gelovani Avenue (Saburtalo district) with Davit Agmashenebeli Alley and will be approximately 95 meters in length.

While visiting the construction-site, Gigi Ugulava, the Mayor of Tbilisi said that Tbilisi has not witnessed such large-scale construction since construction of the Metechi tunnel in the 70’s. “With the construction of this new tunnel, this section of the city will not need any infrastructural changes for about 20-30 years,” Ugulava noted.

One of the main concerns for both Tbilisi residents and the government has been the heavy traffic. In accordance with this concern, city authorities have launched a number of large projects during the last years to improve travel around the city.

The new 3.5 kilometer Varazis Khevi-Tamarashvili highway was built in 2010, which linked Vake with the Saburtalo district. Other projects included repairs made to University, Jikia and Mukhrani streets, all in Saburtalo.
