Monthly annual inflation declines

Monthly inflation rate for February 2012 decreased by 0.3 points compared to January’s 0.5 percent. Average inflation has also slowed down and amounted to 6.2% in February 2012, while in January it was 7.5%.

Inflation’s downward tendency is seen in annual inflation rate indicators too. In February 2012 the annual inflation rate in Georgia equaled 2.1 percent, which is a decline of 2.6 points compared to January 2012 and by 16.4 points compared to May 2011.

German Foreign Minister tours Georgia

German high officials are in Tbilisi and holding meetings with members of the government, as well as civil society. Guido Westerwelle, the German Foreign Minister, who arrived in Tbilisi from Baku, traveled with Markus Loning, the German Federal Government’s Commissioner for Human Rights Policy and Humanitarian Aid and a group of German businessmen.

He met with President Mikheil Saakashvili, Foreign Minister Grigol Vashadze and plans to meet with Georgia’s ex-president Eduard Shevardnadze. During the meeting the Georgian President and German FM discussed the prospects for deepening bilateral as well as multilateral cooperation between the countries. Georgia’s NATO bid and the country’s occupied territories were also discussed.

According to Nino Kalandadze, the Georgian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, this is “the first visit by Mr. Westerwelle to Georgia and we attach great importance his visit.” According to her, the most pleasant fact is that the visit coincides with the 20th anniversary of establishing diplomatic relations between Georgia and Germany. The German Federal Republic was one of the first countries which established diplomatic relations with Georgia on April 13, 1992.

Ilia II congratulates Putin; reminds him of breakaway regions

Congratulating Vladimir Putin on winning his third presidential elections, Ilia II, Catholicos Patriarch of Georgia, reminded him that Georgia would never accept the “loss of” Abkhazia and South Ossetia, its breakaway regions.

“Russians and Georgians have the same religion, which makes us closer, but neither Georgia nor our church will accept the fact that we are torn away from our territories - Abkhazia and the Tskhinvali region,” the web page of the Patriarch’s Office posted on March 13. According to the Catholicos Patriarch, despite the difficulties, Russia and Georgia are fully capable of restoring their relationship, but “only after a historic justice triumphs.”

“I think that your huge experience will contribute to the strengthening of peace and welfare in your country,” Ilia II said, adding that “I am sure, that sooner or later, Georgia’s territorial integrity will be restored but we wish this to happen under your rule.”
