Congratulating Vladimir Putin on winning his third presidential elections, Ilia II, Catholicos Patriarch of Georgia, reminded him that Georgia would never accept the “loss of” Abkhazia and South Ossetia, its breakaway regions.
“Russians and Georgians have the same religion, which makes us closer, but neither Georgia nor our church will accept the fact that we are torn away from our territories - Abkhazia and the Tskhinvali region,” the web page of the Patriarch’s Office posted on March 13. According to the Catholicos Patriarch, despite the difficulties, Russia and Georgia are fully capable of restoring their relationship, but “only after a historic justice triumphs.”
“I think that your huge experience will contribute to the strengthening of peace and welfare in your country,” Ilia II said, adding that “I am sure, that sooner or later, Georgia’s territorial integrity will be restored but we wish this to happen under your rule.”
