Canadian company buys Central Republican Hospital

InterHealth Canada, a global healthcare management firm, was announced as the new owner of the state-owned Central Republican Hospital. The investor is obliged to develop a contemporary, high-tech, multi-use facility that has a 160 bed capacity (including the 80 already existing critical-care beds). The company must bring this development to fruition within two and a half years.
Central Republican Hospital is one of the oldest and most important hospitals in downtown Tbilisi. According to the hospital’s HR department, the hospital has 171 beds and employs about 1,300 people. It sprawls over 77,000 square meters, with about 48,000 square meters of building space. The facility’s total assets are worth approximately $20 million.
The Canadian company is required to maintain the hospital’s profile over the next ten years. This includes investing approximately $25 million for the rehabilitation of the hospital and equipping the hospital with modern amenities.

Ex-finance Minister elected as Chair of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry

Kakha Baindurashvili, the Georgian former-Minister of Finance, was elected as the Chair of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry. He has served the ministry since February of 2009.
Baindurashvili was replaced on the post of Finance Minister by his deputy Dimitri Gvindadze on June 17. Later, Baindurashvili was appointed as the chairman of supervisory board of the Georgian Post, a state-owned body.
Baindurashvili replaced Jemal Inaishvili, who served in this position for over eight years. The latter was downgraded to council member of the Chamber.

Heads of Georgian and Russian Churches to meet in Kiev

According to the Russian Patriarch’s Office, the head of the Georgian Orthodox Church, Ilia II and the Russian Patriarch Kirill will meet in Kiev, Ukraine on the evening of July 26 at the Kievo-Pechora Monastery,
Georgian Patriarch Ilia II, speaking with Exo-Moskvi, a Russian radio station, has recently noted that the mutual understanding between the Russian and Georgian people is gone. However, he added, “we should move towards each other, not in the opposite direction. Ilia II said that his visit will last until July 30. “We are going to meet each other and we will have a brotherly conversation,” he said.

Three candidates run for the Abkhaz Presidency

Alexander Ankvab, acting president of Georgia’s breakaway region of Abkhazia, Sergey Shamba, Prime Minister and Raul Khajimba, the former vice-president will run in the presidential elections in Abkhazia scheduled for August 26.
Early presidential elections in Sokhumi were scheduled due to the death of President Sergey Bagapsh in late May.
Experts say that the strongest candidates are Ankvab and Shamba. They have received their educations in Tbilisi and still have many connections there. However, Raul Khajimba has enough time to make a strong showing during the campaign as well.

Eric Rubin replaces Tina Kaidanow

The US State Department has appointed Eric Rubin as Deputy Assistant Secretary for European and Eurasian Affairs.
Rubin, who served as Deputy Chief of Mission at the US embassy in Moscow, has replaced Tina Kaidanow. Earlier this month, Kaidanow took the post of Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary at the Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs.
Rubin is responsible for the countries of the Caucasus region including Greece, Turkey and Cyprus. He has just participated in a meeting of the US-Georgia Defense and Security working group. The meeting took place within the framework of the strategic partnership charter signed between the US and Georgia on July 18 in Washington.

Kutaisi Torpedo to have new sponsors

Alpa, an insurance company and Silknet, a telecommunication company, have become sponsors of Torpedo Kutaisi, a local football team.
According to Levan Pkhakadze, General Director of Torpedo Kutaisi, the financial assistance is very vital for the team. “The number of sponsors may increase as we are in negotiation with several companies,” Pkhakadze said in live show with Nika Kavtaradze on Radio Kalaki.
Under the deal, the club is obliged to place Alpa’s and Silknet’s logos on advertising materials presented at the press conferences. Alpa will insure all footballers, while Silknet will help the team financially.

Georgian Team wins beach fighting championship

Batumi hosted its first ever International Championship in beach fighting on July 16 and 17. In the end, the Georgian team gained the victory.
According to the Adjara Autonomous Republic’s press department, the competition was held in four weight categories. In total, representatives from 12 countries took part in the championship, which gave floor to both boys and girls.
The Georgian team fought over two days and collected 11 golden medals and reached first place.

UEFA punishes Zestafoni FK

While Georgian champion FK Zestafoni won the match against Dacia Chisinau of Moldova on July 13, the UEFA has fined the stadium where the match was held.
According to the local radio station Radio Kalaki, during the 3rd qualifying round for the UEFA Champions League, a Bulgarian delegate observed that fans having no tickets were climbing on the wall to attend the play.
The delegate took photos and sent them to UEFA headquarters. “Several locals climbed on the stadium, however the police did not stop them,” the complaint reads. As a result, UEFA disqualified the stadium.
