Tbilisi hosts Literary Forum & Dialogue for Publishers, Translators and Writers

Writer/Editor/Researcher/Translator Daniel Hahn and Ra Page, founder and Managing Editor of Comma Press – both from the UK – shared their vision and experience with the Georgian audience as proof of the importance of bilateral cultural relations between Georgia and the UK at the Literary Forum & Dialogue for Publishers, Translators and Writers.
Held on May 22-23, the forum was organized by the British Council together with the Ministry of Culture and Monument Protection of Georgia, as well as the Georgian Book Publishers and Distributors Association, specifically for domestic and foreign publishers, translators and writers.
The forum covered various topics including trends in contemporary Georgian and foreign literature; the Georgian book market; foreign literature in Georgia; children’s literature; Georgian titles in translations; issues in translation and the promotion of Georgian literature on domestic and overseas book markets; translation subsidies and issues related with translation.
“It’s not the reader’s fault [that some books don’t get] published. There is an underlying prejudice that translated, unknown authors will not sell well,” said Daniel Hahn. “Of course translating is very important,” Hahn said. But according to him, there should also be a chain that connects the publisher, the sales department, and booksellers who need to stand together for publishing and promoting a good translation.
