Author:  By Nino Gelashvili

The Tree of Freedom, an annual event organized by the American Friendship Club and the US Embassy of Georgia recently commemorated the 10th anniversary of the September 11 tragedy at hotel Citadine in Tbilisi.

“The goal of the event was to support the American people who lost family members [and friends] during this tragedy,” Ilia Zukakishvili, President of the American Friendship Club told Georgia Today. According to Zukakishvili, they named the event the Tree of Freedom because even a horrific attack the scale of 9/11 cannot diminish the power of freedom.

At the event, famous representatives of Georgian society, as well as several members of the diplomatic corps decorated the symbolic tree of freedom with ribbons in the colors of the U.S. flag.

Batumi International Art-House Film Festival’s curtains rise

Aficionados, art critics, actors, producers and movie fans of all stripes are biding their time to attend the Sixth Annual Batumi International Art-House Film Festival’s (BIAFF) evenings that kicked off on September 17 in Batumi, the Black Sea coastal city of Georgia. Oscar-winning director Woody Allen’s film - Midnight in Paris was featured the opening night of the festival at the Batumi Drama Theater.

“Opening night is always a challenge for our programming team, as the film selected must set the tone for the week to come,” said the festival manager Zviad Eliziani.

BIAFF organizers were unable to obtain a copy of the film with the highest quality and the audience seemed a little disappointed with the screen quality.

“We have obtained the most optimal copy of the film that exists in the former Soviet Union area”, explained Eliziani.

What has beguiled audiences about Midnight in Paris is that the protagonist, Gil, a disenchanted Hollywood screenwriter played by Owen Wilson, gets to live completely in a fantasy world.

At the festival, the films compete in various categories including feature, documentary and short films sections.

This year, there are more then 10 feature, 10 documentary and about 30 short films that will be shown.

Among the documentaries screened at the festival is Pink Saris by Kim Longinotto, an award-winning British documentary filmmaker, famous for her work looking at the oppression suffered by girls and young women in the developing world.

Pink Saris, tells a story about Sampat Pal, a young woman who like many girls in northern India, got married at a very early stage of her life and like many- is faced with problems of family violence.

TBs international continues in a diverse manner

Author:  By Kate Lekishvili

After amazingly Hollywood-esque movie star opening, the 3rd annual Tbilisi International Festival of Theatre 2011’s (TBs) International Program was followed by several unique, emotional and even extraordinary plays.

The big stage of the Kote Marjanishvili State Drama Theatre hosted the play Observatory, a performance staged by the Clipa Theatre from Israel. The play is full of wild music and powerful images and cacophony of sounds left the audience submerged in a multi-sensory world.

The Kharkiv State Academic Drama theatre of Shevchenko represented to the public an experimental play – Woyzeck, which is the story of a young man who could not resist all the lifetime problems he faced. His experiences of war, poverty, love, lies and betrayal left him destroyed from both the physical and mental point of view. The genre is psychologically dramatic with added elements of surrealism- German aesthetics synthesized with Ukrainian farce.

The theatre-goers gathered at the Alexander Griboedov State Russian Theater in Tbilisi faced one of the most important problems of the 21st century: How to draw the line between the real and virtual life. Operomanja, a Lithuanian independent creative group presented its dramatic play ID, once again reminded society how important this realization between the real and virtual really is.

The Autumn Jazz

Print version Print version

Author:  By Maiko Javakhishvili

Try to recall how you enjoyed the Tbilisi International Jazz Festival last autumn. Performances by the legendary McCoy Tyner, the velvety vocals of Dianne Reeves, the expressive Rachelle Ferrell and the young but very talented Christian Scott… If you did not get the chance to attend their concerts or you have not listened to their music, then this list alone is enough to make you regret it. However, you should not worry. Just wait for the end of October.

Yes, ladies and gentlemen, it all took place in 2010, in Tbilisi, in the big concert hall of the Philharmonia (Tbilisi Event Hall). The festival’s unchanged organizer was Eastern Promotion. This year, continuing the tradition, Eastern Promotion will load the Tbilisi autumn with jazz. So, get ready. The 14th International Jazz Festival in Tbilisi is just ahead, and will present the legendary Charles Lloyd New Quartet, Sonny Emory, Larry Coryell, Tamaz Kurashvili and Erykah Badu. I am certain that on the closing day, the extraordinary Erykah Badu will offer the audience a very special musical performance (www.tbilisijazz.com).

The festival opens on October 27 and will last until October 30. The festival is again presented by Tbilisi City Hall, supported by the Georgian Ministry of Culture. The general sponsor of the festival is TBC Bank.

Georgia Today will present the participants of the 14th International Jazz Festival in Tbilisi. The main performers of the first series are Charles Lloyd and Georgian Tamaz Kurashvili. They will perform on the first day of the festival at the Philharmonic.

Let’s start with Charles Lloyd. This very interesting composer and musician from the 1960s’s is a leading figure in the world of jazz. Lloyd arrives in Tbilisi with a quartet consisting of: Charles Lloyd – sax, flute; Jason Moran – piano; Reuben Rogers – bass and Eric Harland – drums. This is a refreshed band. Members of this band are changed periodically but as Lloyd himself says, the band that we will hear in Tbilisi is very much like the quartet in the 60’s. Sounds interesting…
