Wine journalism in Georgia – who cares?
Print version
Author: By Robert Linkous
If you are a wine journalist, Angeles Tegtmeyer, Managing Director of Schuchmann Wines, may reply to your email with such alacrity that you will suspect she has you under surveillance.
In Germany she learned the value of working the media before joining Schuchmann, not founded until 2008. Her company has never had the luxury of doing one-stop sales calling to the Russian Bear, which Putin sent drinking elsewhere than Georgia in 2006. She knows she must promote her wines any way she can, even if many older Georgian wine companies “do not accept this way of marketing.”
As Gvantsa Meladze, Head of Export Support Service for the Georgian National Investment Agency, observed, “Wine journalism in Georgia is yet to be developed. Wine is more of a culture to Georgians rather than a product you write about.”
But this began to change after 2006, she added, and wine journalism, especially as it relates to wine tourism, is “the best marketing tool for attracting wine lovers to Georgia.”
Certainly one Georgian wine company, Badagoni, has learned the value of good press. Their 2007 Alaverdi Traditional Red, grown in Kakheti, caught the attention of the eminent British wine magazine Decanter in a big way.

Print version
Author: By Ana Sabanadze
As Georgia celebrated Independence Day on May 26 and Kutaisi hosted the traditional military parade, local Georgian producers exhibited their military and civilian products at a new Georgian industrial parade entitled Made in Georgia. The parade was held on Rustaveli Avenue, in Tbilisi.
The inaugural producers’ parade is expected to become an annual Independence Day tradition, and is aimed at promoting Georgia’s production locally and internationally. It also aims to help strengthen the Georgian economy, create additional jobs and diversify local production.
President Mikheil Saakashvili attended the producers’ parade before he addressed the parliament in its new chamber in Kutaisi. The president viewed the Georgian-made products on display and congratulated the crowd during their celebration of Georgia’s Independence. Usually held in Tbilisi, the Independence Day military parade was held in Kutaisi this year, coinciding with the recent move of the parliament to Georgia’s second largest city.
Saakashvili touched on the transportation projects underway in Tbilisi and stated that the construction of a new ropeway leading to Mtatsminda Park from Republic Square is planned to begin. “New subway stations are also being built, including a station near the trade centers close to M’tskheta- all parts of Tbilisi will be interconnected,” Saakashvili noted.
