Minister makes statement about swine flu

Labor Minister Alexander Kvirashvili made a special statement today about the increasing number of swine flu cases in Georgia. According to the party official, 1,750 individuals were hospitalized in November and December. The minister stressed that the majority of the patients recovered and are feeling well. Four patients, however, have died. The minister said the patients died after appealing too late for medical treatment.

Georgia expects release of two juveniles from Tskhinvali

Georgia expects juveniles Viktor Buchukuri and Levan Khmiadashvili to be released this week. The teens were earlier detained and have been under arrest in Tskhinvali. Ten days ago two other youths were released by a de facto South Ossetian court after Council of Europe Human Rights Commissioner Thomas Hammarberg crossed the administrative border late that evening. Alongside Khmiadashvili and Buchukuri, the teens had headlined local media for nearly a month after being detained by de facto South Ossetian border guards. Romelashvili and Sabadze received a probationary sentence and Khmiadashvili and Buchukuri were each sentenced to one year in prison.

Ebralidze to meet Georgia Peoples Congress

The Georgia Peoples Congress will be held in Saint Petersburg today. The event, for which Georgian diaspora representatives arrive from six different countries, is being organized by ethnic Georgian-Russian citizen and Saint Petersburg-based entrepreneur Alexander Ebralidze. Ebralidze has voiced his ambitions to run for Georgian president. He told Georgia Today that he is ready to fight for the presidency.

Storms in Kakheti

Heavy storms damaged the Kakheti region last night. The Dedoplistskaro, Sighnaghi and Telave regions were most affected by the gale. Sagarejo was most damaged. According to official information, the storms broke roofs and blew down trees.

Bagapsh reelected

De facto Akhazian President Sergey Bagapsh was reelected after winning 59.4 percent of the votes in Georgia's breakaway region, preliminary results of the Central Elections Commission (CEC) show. Raul Khajinba, his major competitor, received 15.4 percent of the votes followed by Zaur Ardzinba with 10.6 percent, Beslan Butba -- 7.9 percent and Vitaly Bganba -- 1.5 percent,Apsnypress reported.

Georgian sailor sinks in the Black Sea

Rescue operations resumed early this morning in search of two dead sailors, whose ship sank in the Black Sea yesterday. No news have been reported about the Georgian sailor on the Panama-flagged Oganbey ship Davit Tchitchilashvili.
