Poti recovering but fear lingers

Poti is coming back to life although residents still have much to worry about.

Most of the 55,000 living in Poti have returned. Most shops have been reopened and the bazaar is as animate as ever. However, one can easily discern a sense of fear in most of the locals' eyes.

Georgian links of unity

September 1st will be commemorated in the annals of Georgian history as the day when the country stood together in its biggest acts of unity and activism. At 15:00 Georgian time (11:00 GMT) all of Georgia, including citizens living abroad, stood together to comprise a human chain of solidarity just as the European Union was getting ready for its meeting to discuss possible sanctions against Moscow due to the recent violence against Georgia.

Patriot Act coming to Georgia

Georgia’s President Saakashvili spoke out recently about his intention to establish “a Patriotic Act “in Georgia. Saakashvili made this declaration in a meeting with local authorities in the port town of Poti late on August 29.

Countess Irina Bagration-Moukhransky

Prince Teimuraz Bagrationi-Moukhransky is a descendant of the Kingdom of Georgia's royal dynasty and is the great-great grandson of Czar Nicholas I of Russia. One of his dreams was the return of a unique collection of Georgian archives to Georgia and it was ultimately his wife, Irina Bagrationi-Moukhransky, who eventually realized that dream, presenting in 2004 King Vakhtang V's 17th century gospel to President Mikheil Saakashvili. The Georgian manuscript is a small collection of gospels that King Vakhtang V carried on him while going to war.

Georgia receives 43 deceased

Yesterday, Georgia received 43 bodies of those deceased during the recent conflict. According to the head of the Defense Committee of the Georgian Parliament, Givi Targamadze, 45 bodies are known to be located in the territory of Tskhinvali, however, as the opposing side has stated, they have been unable to find more than 43.

Bush Condemns Russia's Decision

"The Russian President's decision is inconsistent with numerous United Nations Security Council resolutions and the current ceasefire agreement," said US President George W. Bush in a statement released on August 26. The United States condemns the decision by the Russian President to recognize the Georgian regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia as independent states and calls on Russia to reconsider its decision.
